How I build a model

  1. 01

    Separate inputs from mechanics

Every assumption lives in one place and is labelled with its unit and source. Nothing is hard-coded inside a calculation, so any driver can be changed and traced through to the output.

  2. 02

    Build from operating drivers

Revenue is derived from the things a business actually manages, like customers, churn and price, rather than a growth rate typed over last year. That makes a forecast defensible and a variance explainable.

  3. 03

    Tie the output back

Variances reconcile to the penny. Cash flow ties to the income statement. Where a bridge is shown, its steps sum to the endpoint. A model that does not tie out has not been finished.

  4. 04

    End with a decision

A model is only useful if it answers the question that was asked. Each project closes with a recommendation, the risks around it, and what would change the conclusion.

03 · About

Marcus Drzal

Initially I went into finance because in high school my dad and I would talk about the markets a lot, and the inner workings of it really intrigued me. When I was in school what I wanted to do shifted as I fell in love with my class called Finance 303: Financial Forecasting. From there I knew what I wanted to do for work, because I really enjoyed it.
